[Guide home](</>) Facial and dental references

One supplied explanation

# Read the references in a supplied explanation

Read a fictional record before interpreting its proposed change\.

2. [Six readings](<https://orthodonticbitebroward.com/facial-and-dental-midlines#read-the-record>)
3. [Keep the context](<https://orthodonticbitebroward.com/facial-and-dental-midlines#your-record>)
4. [Your conversation](<https://orthodonticbitebroward.com/facial-and-dental-midlines#your-conversation>)

## Start with the supplied record

**Fictional adult record:** age 32, 31 October 2026, one frontal view\. The clinician marks a chosen facial reference \(F\), an upper dental midline \(U\) and a lower dental midline \(L\)\.

**Recorded relationships:** U coincides with F\. L lies to the patient's left of F\.

**Separate jaw assessment:** the clinician records a leftward lower jaw position difference\.

**Proposed change:** reposition lower teeth so L is closer to U\. The supplied plan excludes jawbone repositioning and a promise of a centered chin\.

**The person's concern:** “My chin appears shifted left\. Would this tooth change address that concern?” Growth status is not supplied\.

Age 32 does not establish growth completion\. Age and growth context matter in assessment and planning\.

## Follow what each statement means

### 1\. Read the upper reference

Upper dental midline U matches chosen facial reference F in this record; that does not establish facial symmetry\.

### 2\. Compare the lower reference with both

Since upper dental midline U matches facial reference F, lower dental midline L is left of both\. “Left” means the patient's left in this one supplied view\.

### 3\. Keep the assessed jaw finding separate

The jaw finding is separately assessed, not read from lower dental midline L\. Shared direction alone shows neither cause nor which jaw side is shorter\.

### 4\. Follow the proposed tooth target

The proposed change to the lower teeth targets L relative to U\. This record supplies no judgement that it is suitable or achievable\.

### 5\. Read the plan's boundary

Tooth positioning and jawbone repositioning are different changes\. This plan excludes the latter, so it leaves the chin concern unresolved\.

### 6\. Name the remaining clarification

Which change, if any, addresses the stated chin concern, and who assesses it?

## Keep the wording with the record

Keep the date, view, named references, separate assessment, proposed goal, exclusions and the unresolved question together\. If a reference, view or date differs, the comparison is not established\. Missing findings remain unknown\.

This example interprets supplied words\. It does not assess your face, explain a personal cause or choose care\. A child's or teenager's development and review context are not supplied here\.
